“Aluminium has become a popular choice for contemporary sliding and bifold door systems thanks to its combination of strength, dimensional stability and corrosion resistance,” he notes. However, selecting aluminium alone is not enough. “Surface preparation, coatings and component selection all play an important role in ensuring the system can withstand the conditions found in exposed locations,” he adds.

Corrosion resistance: selecting materials and finishes for exposed locations

Corrosion resistance is one of the most important considerations when specifying glazing systems for coastal environments. Exposure to salt-laden air and moisture can accelerate corrosion, meaning material selection, protective finishes and hardware choices all affect long-term performance.

“For exposed coastal locations, we recommend pre-anodisation combined with high weather-finish (HWF) powder coatings,” Justin says.

“Pre-anodising creates a protective oxide layer on the aluminium, which improves corrosion resistance,” he explains.

The HWF powder coating is then applied. “Compared with standard architectural finishes, HWF provides improved resistance to UV degradation and weathering. It also maintains its colour for longer,” he adds.

Hardware corrosion resistance should also be considered. Components such as handles, hinges and locking mechanisms are exposed to the same environmental conditions as the frame. Specifying corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, can therefore help maintain reliable operation over time.

Structural performance: designing for wind loading and movement

Expansive glazing is a defining feature of contemporary coastal homes: it creates a clean, minimalist aesthetic while maximising views and natural daylight.

However, large glazed openings introduce additional structural challenges. This is particularly true in exposed locations, where higher wind loads place greater demands on glass, frames, fixings and supporting structures.

“Large glazed panels and slim frames are typically preferred because they provide wider views with fewer interruptions, but they also put the system at greater risk of horizontal deflection under wind loading,” explains Justin. “Where higher levels of structural performance are required, options such as smaller panels, thicker glass, wider profiles or additional reinforcement may need to be considered, depending on the project requirements.”

Weather resistance: managing water ingress

Coastal locations are often exposed to driving rain, making weather resistance another key consideration when specifying sliding doors and bifold doors.

Effective weather resistance relies on a combination of system design, drainage, seals and installation quality.

Justin notes that threshold design should be carefully planned to ensure effective weather resistance. “Low-level or flush thresholds can improve accessibility and create a smooth transition between internal and external spaces, but they must be engineered to prevent moisture ingress,” he explains.
