British brick meets modern chic

The cero sliding window brings daylight flooding into a terraced home

When viewed from the street, this family’s home in Nottingham  looks like a typical British terraced house – the type that is rarely spacious inside. But at the back it holds an unusual surprise: a bright, spacious living area with a seamless transition to the outdoors.

The English couple didn’t know exactly what they wanted their home conversion to look like, but certain requirements were an absolute must: they wanted to expand their living space and connect it to their garden, while at the same time giving the house a more modern and exclusive look.

They decided to opt for an extension to create more space for themselves and their two children. During the planning phase, the main focus was on creating a generous sense of space. This is how the family ended up with a new heart for their home: a living area with an open-plan kitchen where they can relax and spend time together. The extension also gave them an opportunity to give their home a unique twist.

Maximum transparency

Being able to see straight out into the natural world from the living room and kitchen was very important to the owner. “My wife didn’t want to spend her time staring at bulky window frames,” recalls her husband, explaining the couple’s design choices.
cero fulfilled their expectations to the letter. With slender aluminium profiles unmatched by the competition – with sight lines of just 34 mm – and a glass content of 98 percent, the system offered maximum transparency. Two cero sliding windows with excellent thermal insulation were used for the design. With a length of over seven metres and a height of more than two metres, they allow the entire ground floor to be opened up to allow access to the garden.

Technology that caters to great expectations
cero sliding windows can be installed with window panes up to 15 square meters in size and six metres tall. When the windows are open, the accessible floor track provides a smooth transition between the interior and the outdoors. But it is their ease of handling that makes them truly special – thanks to their stainless steel carriage and running tracks, they allow glass elements up to 15 square metres in size and 1,000 kg in weight to be moved effortlessly and silently. Alternatively, the windows can be fitted with an electric motor so they open at the push of a button.
cero is available with double or triple glazing, and is tested and certified in line with the highest security standards. The sliding windows offer RC3 class anti-burglary protection.

The redesign has given the British couple more living space, combining the classic style of the terraced house with the timeless, minimalist design of the extra-large cero sliding windows. The windows lend the house a modern aesthetic and have created a greater sense of space inside.
