Glass house – Rheine

All-round protection from the elements

For most homeowners, the garden is a key part of the home – their personal oasis and a place for the family to meet. Protection from wind and weather allows families to stretch out the patio season and use the outdoor parts of their property almost all year round. One owner in Rheine, north-west Germany, decided to install a Solarlux glass house so he could spend his evenings outside as soon as the first shoots of spring started to show.

The rural detached house bordering the local forest boasts a spacious outdoor area with a patio and an offset sitting area. The owner designed the garden himself, his close attention to detail creating a unique ambience that he wanted to be able to enjoy as much as possible. As such, he was often disappointed to find his free time restricted to the indoors by so many rainy and blustery days. He needed a solution that would hold off any weather and provide him with a cosy spot where he could sit in his garden all year round.

Protected on all sides

When looking for the best way to shelter his patio, the owner’s main priority was making sure he could be cosy while still retaining an unobstructed view of the neighbouring forest. He achieved this by installing a glass house whose enchanting sense of light and transparency blended in perfectly with the overall concept of his garden. Unlike a simple glass canopy, a glass house also has vertical glass elements around the sides that provide protection from the elements. These can easily be pushed to the side  when it’s sunny, giving the owner an open and airy patio for the summer months.

The perfect partner

When it came to choosing the right manufacturer, quality and design were the owner’s main concerns. He didn’t really make up his mind until he had an in-depth consultation on his building project. This convinced him that the SDL Atrium glass canopy by Solarlux was the right choice. The 25 m² monopitch roof provided ample shelter for the patio, while the vertical glazing was supplied in the form of an SL 25 frameless slide-and-turn system, which can be opened to the left or the right. When closed, the glass house offers the perfect space to relax in, even on cool and rainy days. The sheltered patio also has a built-in radiant heater to keep it warm when necessary.

The whole concept is rounded off by a number of extra features. There are two shading solutions to protect the owner from strong sunlight, while stylish highlights such as the recessed pillars and built-in LED spotlights tie up the ambience perfectly. Thanks to the canopy, the patio is now a favourite spot that the whole family can use every day. The atmosphere in the illuminated glass house is truly something special, and has turned the end of every day into a mini-break where the owner and his family can recharge their batteries.
