When the folding elements are opened, they have the visual effect of a sectional door. They disappear completely from view and allow the interior to transition seamlessly into the exterior."

About love

In short, we really enjoy what we do. That's why we are called the way we are. Our name is a representative of our passion for architecture – in general and in particular. When we work, we do so with the highest standards of design, looking for the precise solutions for the specific task. We are concerned with the framework conditions, as well as the people involved. In doing so, we are precise, pragmatic and factual, but at the same time full of enthusiasm and passion for the task at hand. LOVE architecture and urbanism was founded in 1998 by a group of architects whose fields of work include architecture, urban planning, interior design and project development.

Space as an art form

A young art dealer has fulfilled his dream of open living in Graz's old town. In "Raphael's Refuge" with a view over the rooftops of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will look in vain for classic walls. The extraordinary loft unfolds in all directions – from left to right, from bottom to top, and even from inside to outside. This was made possible by the fluid design concept of the Graz-based architectural firm LOVE Architecture and a client who is not afraid of spatial expansiveness and creative freedom.

A floor-to-ceiling curtain creates retreats when needed and at the same time contributes to pleasant room acoustics.

Apartment and art gallery in one

Giving free rein to creativity – this attitude to life accompanies the young art dealer through everyday life in his new home without walls. His new "refuge" is an apartment and art gallery in one. Freestanding, sculptural-looking pieces of furniture with high aesthetic standards structure the partially two-story space with a recessed gallery. They are more reminiscent of works of art in a gallery than of functional everyday objects. Only a heavy curtain that winds through the loft in waves creates private zones if necessary. It not only acts as a privacy screen, but above all supports the room acoustics.

The open one-room concept arose from the spatial conditions of the existing building, which LOVE Architecture deliberately developed further, as any subdivision would have weakened the desired loft character. The 224 m² apartment is located on the top floor of an extended old building in Graz city centre. In 2018, the historic building was extended in timber construction as part of a renovation.

From office to refuge

The current refuge was used as an office before the renovation. The structural interventions in the frame of the conversion were kept to a minimum: "We only replaced the floor and freshly painted the walls," recalls Mark Jenewein, partner at LOVE Architecture. The gallery and the staircase positioned freely in the room, as well as the large balcony in front of the 6.30-meter-wide, six-meter-high glass front with north orientation, were already in place.

The concept of flowing space was taken on the outside.

Furnishing as art

There are no fixed fixtures, everything was deliberately designed to be open. The space is divided into different usage zones by free-standing design objects alone. These include a stainless steel kitchen that rises up to the ceiling like a cathedral, as well as a massive kitchen block above which handmade glass lamps float like soap bubbles. A sofa accessible from all sides underlines the idea of a flowing, directionless space. In the rear area of the loft, the bathtub and double sinks can be shielded by the floor-to-ceiling curtain if necessary.

The existing post-bolt-facade
opens with two Bi-folding doors.

When the bi-foldings are closed, 1.30 m wide glass elements and slim profiles ensure a high outdoor connection.

Smooth transition between indoors and outdoors

To continue the concept of open space into the outdoor area, the existing post-and-bolt facade was remodeled taking into account the static conditions of the existing building and opened up over a large area with two Bi-folding doors from Solarlux. "Our goal was to make the loft as limitless and open as possible," he explains. "On warm days, a single, continuous room was to be created, while on cooler days, it was important to maintain optimal visibility."

Bi-foldings offered the perfect solution for this: Unlike classic sliding doors, their elements can be folded completely to the side to form a narrow glass package, creating a seamless transition. This effect is increased by a microcement floor that extends across all surfaces. The folding systems "park" on the balcony in Graz to save space.

The individual glass elements of the folding walls should be up to 1.30 meters wide and at the same time appear delicate, which is why the Megaline system from Solarlux was chosen. It enables element heights of up to 4.5 meters or widths of up to 1.5 meters, without compromising on free movement and ease of use. Despite these dimensions, the sight line at the panel butt joint is only 132.5 millimeters. A barrier-free variant with a 14-millimeter rebate with additional aluminium impact protection was used as the floor track.

The bi-folding door is opened according to the accordion principle and parked on the balcony to save space.

Courage to be open as a design attitude

Sometimes it takes a courageous builder to consistently implement architectural ideas down to the last detail. LOVE Architecture found such a solution in the young art dealer. The room concept, which is open in all directions, is created by deliberately dispensing with rigid boundaries, such as walls, ceilings, floor coverings, or usage zones. Even the green bed continues through the glass front onto the balcony. The generously dimensioned bi-foldings emphasise the seamless transition between the living space and the terrace, making the idea of open living tangible.

bi-folding doors

The possibilities of a bi-folding door are almost unlimited. It achieves what no other floor-to-ceiling window offers: generous glass fronts that can be opened almost 100% and offer maximum protection when closed. Unlike the classic sliding door, the individual elements of the bi-folding door can be folded completely to the side to form a narrow leaf package. This capability also qualifies the bi-folding door for flexible interior organisation in all types of buildings, such as room extensions in offices, retail and hospitality as well as in schools. Their limitless combinability and best insulation values also make them an efficient façade solution for upgrading balconies and loggias.
