Nature sets the tone

The west coast of Denmark is home to fascinating dunescapes that, even today, still maintain their sense of natural wonder. This is thanks to the sensitive manner in which most of the holiday homes in the area have been integrated into their natural surroundings – the buildings do not protrude above the surrounding dunes, a decision that also keeps them sheltered from the wind and weather. In spite of the low-lying, almost forbidding location, architect Jan Wenzel has managed to create a new build using a limited range of materials that opens up fully to the marvels all around it.

The client wanted a holiday home with space for their whole family. From the outset, Copenhagen-based architect Jan Wenzel knew that the imposing dune landscape of Denmark’s North Sea coast would be the major player when it came to shaping his design. He designed a beach house, sheltered from prying eyes and the weather, that incorporates the remarkable natural scenery and fascinating light of the north in the building unencumbered.

Inviting nature indoors with sliding windows

The beach house boasts a total of four cero sliding windows by Solarlux, with nine moving elements that open up onto the courtyard, completely dissolving the physical boundary between the inside and the outdoors. The largest of the sliding windows is 7.30 m long and 3.10 m tall, and covers the entire length of the living area. Three more cero sliding windows, each over 3 m wide and comprising two sliding elements, provide an accessible exit from the bedrooms opposite.

It was a deliberate choice to install automatic drives in all the rooms so that the building components, which can weigh up to 1,000 kg, can also be opened and closed manually with zero effort. This is thanks to the ingenious stainless steel sliding mechanism, with built-in track rollers for an even load distribution.

Space without boundaries

Oh, to wake up during the holidays, in the heart of Denmark’s unique dune landscape, closer to Mother Nature than you’ve ever felt in your everyday life – with the extra-large cero sliding windows by Solarlux, this dream is now a reality. With the cero’s delicate frames, which allow for a glass composition of 98%, this wonderful feeling remains even when the transparent building components are closed.

With its straight lines and cubic design, the SDL Avalis flat roof system by Solarlux fits right in with the latest architectural trends, its harmonious proportions meeting the highest aesthetic standards. Individual dimensions and flexible opening options, such as the cero sliding window or bi-folding door systems, offer an extraordinary amount of creative freedom in terms of design. It’s even possible to install a roof opening for a skylight. The ingenious system components and high degree of pre-fabrication of the roof elements make installation times very short. In 2021, the SDL Avalis roof system won the if Design Award, the ICONIC AWARD: Innovative Architecture, and was named Solution of the Year in the “Häuser des Jahres” (Buildings of the Year) competition.

An outdoor kitchen set up in the blink of an eye

But the real star of this holiday home is the kitchen – acting as the connecting space between the sleeping quarters and the living area, it can be fully opened across a width of almost 6 m on both its longest sides. This metamorphosis into a trendy outdoor kitchen is made possible by floor-to-ceiling bi-folding doors by Solarlux. A total of six elements on each side can be folded up accordion-style into a slender bundle of glass, which then “parks” inconspicuously at the side of the patio, creating an opening 5.80 m wide and 3.10 m high.

cero sliding windows

The cero sliding window operates within the parameters of aesthetics, functionality and quality, with slender frames and profiles that help to make the elements transparent. Its narrow profiles and slim, all-round panel frames, which are only 34 mm wide, underline the minimalist design without compromising on aspects such as security, convenience and performance. The system components can be combined in almost any configuration and offer the complete freedom of design that sophisticated projects and clients require. Panel sizes of up to 6 m tall or 4 m wide and a maximum panel weight of up to 1,000 kg create new, open dimensions in the room.

Bi-folding doors

The possibilities offered by a bi-folding door are almost limitless. It offers what no other floor-to-ceiling window can: generous glass fronts that can be opened across almost 100% of their area while still offering maximum protection when closed. Unlike traditional sliding doors, all the individual elements of a bi-folding door can be gathered up in a slender bundle of panels at one side. This feature also makes the bi-folding door perfect for flexible organisation of interior spaces in all kinds of buildings, such as room extensions in office spaces, retail, gastronomy, and even schools. On top of this, the limitless combinations and top-of-the-range insulation values it offers also make it an efficient facade solution when it comes to renovating both open and recessed balconies.
