SDL Acubis Iconic Award

Award-winning aesthetics: “Iconic Award” for the Acubis flat canopy

Space without limits – the Acubis flat canopy from Solarlux raises the bar in terms of flexibility, aesthetics and potential scope of use, and impressed the jury of the Iconic Awards 2020: Innovative Architecture across the board.

Shelter from the rain, maximum creative freedom and the utmost convenience – the jury was impressed by the myriad of benefits the Acubis has to offer. The flat canopy has now won the “Iconic Award 2020: Innovative Architecture”.
With its restrained aesthetics, the Acubis is the perfect match for any style of architecture – especially buildings with cubist leanings.

Its slender rafters lend the Acubis a discreet elegance, while its slim, all-round, 253-mm-high facing underscores its sophisticated character. The versatile system can be set up as a free-standing construction or integrated into the existing house architecture. “Traditional” patio roofing is just one of the many possibilities it offers. It is also suitable for use as a sheltered pergola, or to extend outdoor seating areas in the gastronomy industry.

The Acubis flat canopy also raises the bar in terms of flexibility and potential scope of use. Vertical glazing can be added to it in the form of Solarlux sliding or slide-and-turn systems, turning the canopy into a glass house and incorporating its cuboid form into any environment as a separate room with almost invisible glazing.

Sophisticated technology

But it’s not just the shape that makes Acubis unique. It also comes with a range of sophisticated technical details, such as its barely perceptible two-degree roof pitch and the concealed gutters and downpipes for rainwater drainage.

The laminated safety glass used in the overhead areas is available in thicknesses of 8, 10 and 12 mm. The fully tested structural specifications offer peace of mind when working with unusual conditions, such as large roof areas and high wind and snow loads. Steel reinforcements can be inserted into the chambers of the bearing profiles to maximise the opening widths and spans. The variant with indented supports can be used to create transparent, all-glass corners. Additional extras are also available to help you create that cosy atmosphere, such as LED spotlights set into in the rafters and all around the facing. Bespoke shading options can be added to guarantee effective protection from the sun.

On 5 October, the Acubis flat canopy won Solarlux the “Iconic Awards 2020: Innovative Architecture”. The international architecture and design competition recognises visionary architecture, innovative products and sustainable communication in all aspects of the architecture, construction and property sector and the manufacturing industry.
