The Internet of things

IoT (Internet of Things) refers to connected devices and the technology that facilitates communication between devices and devices and the cloud.

A new regime is coming into effect on 29 April 2024 to help protect consumers concerning IoT devices. It will require UK consumer connectable products (or 'smart' products) manufacturers to ensure they and their products meet the relevant minimum security requirements. There are two pieces of legislation:

  • Part 1 of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act 2022; and
  • The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (Security Requirements for Relevant Connectable Products) Regulations 2023.

How does this involve Solarlux?

Other relevant persons also subject to duties of product security are the manufacturers, importers, and distributors of relevant connectable products - this will apply to Solarlux third-party products.

The top three cyber security provisions for the consumer which will be in force are:

  • No universal default passwords
  • A means to manage vulnerability reports
  • Keeping software updated.

You can be assured that the third-party accessories Solarlux sells with its products are compliant with 'UK's consumer connectable product security regime', such as the wintergarden glazed extension electrical products; the control systems, lock monitoring sensors and glass breakage detectors that are connected to home alarm/smart systems that are in turn connected to the internet.
